ATS1206 - Media challenges-A1

Assessment 1: Reading Tasks

Due: By Monday 5 pm in Weeks 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9

Value: 20% total

Purpose: These reading tasks encourage and direct your reading in the unit, using the collaborative reading tool Perusall. The reading tasks will help you understand the weekly topics and key ideas and strategies in the field. They also give you a chance to interact with your peers from right across the unit.

Word count: Minimum 5 comments per reading

Instructions:

  • Click the 'Week # Reading Task' link in the pre-class section of each weekly page. This will take you to Perusall. You MUST use this link to access the task in order to receive your grade.

  • Carefully read the set reading and make at least 5 comments throughout the text (see below for instructions on how to comment). Each week there will be some brief guiding questions to direct your reading and thinking.

  • To comment, highlight the text and type in the comment box. You can also respond to a classmate’s annotation in threads or upvote questions you find helpful. Good comments contribute to the class by stimulating discussion, explaining your thought processes, helping others, and drawing attention to good points. If a particular classmate’s point is relevant, you can explicitly "mention" them and they will be immediately notified, even if not presently signed on.

  • Below are some approaches that will help you get the most out of this task, and will be used as criteria in grading your comments:

    • Contribute thoughtful questions and comments that aim to stimulate thinking and discussion. What do you find interesting and why? Explain why you agree or disagree with a point. It's fine to indicate when you don't understand something! But try to explain your thinking, rather than just reacting.

      • Spread your comments throughout the entire reading

      • Start the reading early

      • Read all the way to the end of the assigned reading

      • Pose questions and comments that aim to elicit responses from classmates

      • Answer questions from others

  • You will complete your reading tasks in assigned groups of 20 students, which will be composed of people from across ATS1206. This means you have a chance to 'meet' and interact with students in the unit beyond your tutorial group. You can only see and engage with the comments of others in your group, as well as your tutor.

  • Grades for the reading tasks will be released at the end of Weeks 4, 6 and 9.
