INSTRUCTIONS
On Moodle under Assessment 1 section, you will find Andy’s food and exercise journal. The
journal contains Andy’s dietary record and physical activity record for three consecutive
days. The Excel file contains two sections - dietary record (tab 1), physical activity record (tab
2).
Your job is to analyse the data presented in the Excel spreadsheet and reflect on Andy’s
eating and exercise habits by answering the questions below.
Your analysis and the reflection should be completed on a Microsoft Word Document and
submitted via the Turnitin Assignment 1 submission box found on Moodle.
You are not required to submit the Excel file. The Excel file contains the raw data you need
to calculate and analyse to answer the questions below.
The reflection should be between 1800-2000 words and should not go beyond 2000 words.
You must use the relevant knowledge from the lessons and learning resources to support
your reflection. This means you will need to include in text citations and a reference list of
all the sources you used. Some questions may not require any references while others
require one or two. Overall, you should have a minimum of 5 references. The references can
be done in any referencing style you are comfortable with as long as it is consistent
throughout the document. The references are not part of the word count.
This assignment is worth 50 marks and the mark breakdown for each question can be seen
below.
There is no specific marking rubric for this assignment. You will be given marks on your
ability to answer each component of the questions below effectively.
Your answers must contain evidence to support your thoughts from Andy’s journal and
other sources.
1QUESTIONS
Question 1 (5 marks)
Using the data presented in the Excel file fill out the table below. Remember that 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ.
Use this conversion when you are trying to calculate the kJ/day values.

Using the information provided in the Excel file, calculate the daily energy requirement value using

for Andy. You will need to decide about the physical
activity level by looking at Andy’s physical activity record.
2.1 The daily energy requirement value from the website (kcal/day)

2.3 What is the major difference between these two values? Consider what factors were used to
calculate these two values in your answer. When you consider an individual’s daily energy needs

Question 3 (10 marks)
3.1 Based on the calculated average daily energy intake and expenditure values were the calories
stored or burned for energy? How did you come to this conclusion? (1 mark)
The next components of question 3 needs to be answered based on the choice (burned or stored)
you made for 3.1. Only answer one or the other.
If you selected burned answer the following questions:
23.2 Why does the body need to produce energy? (2 marks)
3.3 How does the body breakdown food to make energy? You should briefly talk about the digestion
process of the macronutrients and the respiration process. (5 marks)
3.4 Discuss if Andy has consumed enough to meet his daily energy requirements and if it is not
sufficient how he will obtain the energy needed. (2 marks)

3.2 Explain the process of how the body store energy. You should address the following: Which
organs are involved in storage? What is the purpose of storage? What macronutrient gets stored

4.1 What are incidental activities? Provide some examples from Andy’s diary. (2 marks)
4.2 When combined overall for the 3 days which types of activities provided the most energy out?
Was it incidental or athletic? Why? (2 marks)
4.3 When looking at 1 hour of incidental activities versus 1 hour of athletic activities, which
contribute to the most energy expenditure and why? (3 marks)
4.4 Which single activity contributed to the most energy out in Day 1? What is the reason behind
why this activity requires so much energy? (3 marks)

SOME TIPS
Most of the information to support your answers will be in lessons 5-8. You can use lessons
as references. Do not copy information from the lessons. You should be presenting the
information from the lesson in your own words to support your answers.
You should also use other sources of information such as journal articles or websites.
Don’t get confused between calories, Calories, and kcal. This link

provides a good
explanation on the similarities and differences between those terms.
Keep an eye on the units when doing the calculations on the Excel file. Make sure you use
the correct units when doing the calculations or you will end up getting the incorrect values.
You will be asked to describe your energy intake and expenditure in both kcal and kJ.
Remember that 1 kcal = 4.184 kJ.OPTIONAL
While not compulsory, we also recommend that you keep track of your own diet and physical
activities over a 3-day period. This will help you answer question number 6 of the assignment more
easily. There are various phone apps and websites that track and record your diet. Additional
features on these apps include personalised exercise trackers (for example, apps that record how
long you walked in a day, and your average speed). One example of such an app is the MyFitnessPal

(available as a phone app on iTunes and Google Play). It has a large dietary database and a barcode
scanner. However, there are plenty of other apps and websites, such as the Exercise Burn tool on My

to track and/or record your diet. The
